A friend of mine replied to the “Damned Americans” Blog, this was her response.
“That’s great and all… but doesn’t it say in Romans (10:9-10)
“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dad, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. I don’t understand why someone would say that just because you may struggle at times, you aren’t REALLY a Christian….. after all… we’re not perfect and God doesn’t expect perfection from us.”
These are great thoughts and questions that we as Christians need to ask. If we are not willing to wrestle with these issues then it does not matter if we are right because our relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is demoted to nothing more than a convenient belief.
This was my response to her questions and concerns.
You brought up Romans 10:9 “… and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead.” The word and makes that statement a requirement to confession by mouth. You can confess with your mouth and those words can be empty. But confession with a truly convicted heart, a heart that does not just know and understand the life and work of Christ but is pushed by it, that person is saved.
Matthew 7:22-23 “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”
People believe their faith in Christ is Genuine all the time. Matthew 7:14 “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” But many people are deceived by themselves, the world and the American Church.
Confessing with your mouth can happen for any number of reasons, fear, loneliness, desire, want… but none of these are enough to merit salvation from Christ. We as humans cannot desire God enough on our own to ever need salvation the way and reason Christ intends to give it to us.
Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God” Blessed are those who are desperate to be saved from themselves, who recognize that they have no ability for righteousness on their own. What seems to be so confusing about Christianity these days is that people think they can get to God on their own. But we can’t. We are so radically immersed in unrighteousness that no man apart from God could or would ever recognize his own despair. Nor would they want to change for a God who loves them and offers them a way out of their own selfishness. Unless God sends his holy spirit to that person and turns their stubborn heads towards Christ NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW GOD.
When a church simply has a prayer and announces a conversion on spot with no accountability to that person’s intension or transformation, or when a leader comforts a person’s troubled heart by assuring their salvation we see a flood of people mislead and headed on the wide path.
I hear you. We all struggle. But we are not the ones who assure people of their salvation, we show them how to be one; leave it to God to give and assure salvation. And I think that if we evaluate many of the life styles of Christians, we will see more than simple inconstancies or struggles, we will see a very self involved desire for what makes them most happy, and it is not GOD.
I will end my long rant on your last comment. You said “we’re not perfect and God doesn’t expect perfection from us.” That is a dangerous thing to say. Because what are you condoning, or what are you saying God condones. Our relationship with Christ is a pursuit. It is a vigorous pursuit that is full of passion, zeal, desire, want, anticipation, it is a fight. It’s a fight away from impurity, adultery and a fight towards righteousness and fidelity. Since being married I have learned how much I do not value Christ. With my wife, I pursue here more intimately now than ever before, I anticipate her needs and I desire her joy. I watch after her heart and desire more than anything her happiness. Do you see this… we don’t even value Christ like this. But we should fight too every day. This relationship with God has to be passionate, and though it will not be perfect on our account, we fight for it.
I would say this instead…
God expects a deeply passionate pursuit from us, incomparable and untamable.
